When we decide what pictures we want to use for our profile pictures, what factors do we consider? Most of the time we use rhetoric in making this decision in order to depict a certain image of ourselves to our followers. Choosing a profile picture may not seem that complicated but many people spend a good bit of time taking, selecting, and editing their pictures.

In my profile picture, I am trying to invent the argument that I have various characteristics. I have three different shots in one. One showing me smiling, another with me “giving a kiss” and, one with me making my famous “Grrrr” face scrunching up my nose and showing my teeth like a lion. The smiling is intended to invent the idea that I am nice and friendly. I used “giving a kiss” to show my loving and adorable side. Finally, the “Grrrr” face is intended to show my viewers my weird side. Since, I found these to be my main characteristics I wanted to depict them to my viewers.

Figure 1.1 The original three pictures that I used to create my Facebook profile picture.

Along with invention, arrangement was a key factor in creating my profile picture. The way a picture is arranged can change its message or purpose so, it’s important that it be considered in pictures. This picture is composed of three different edited pictures that I took at the same time in the same place, depicted above in Figure 1.1. I chose to crop out the background and the shirt I was wearing, leaving me with only headshots. This has a dramatic effect on the picture because it focuses only on my facial expressions. Instead of distracting the viewer with where I was and what I was wearing I cropped them out and only left what I thought to be most important.
